They disappeared from everyday life in the 1950s, but since then the bed bug has returned to our mattresses and to many developed countries such as France.
They feed on blood and bite at night
At the beginning of the year, the government created a telephone number to answer all questions and take the right steps against bed bugs (0806 706 806). It was advisable not to put your luggage on your bed when you return from a trip (or during it), to clean furniture bought second-hand or even to wash second-hand clothes. Between 2016 and 2020, 7% of the French were affected by bed bugs.
A female lays 5 to 15 eggs per day.
Bedbugs are very tenacious and their life expectancy can exceed a year without food. A female lays 5 to 15 eggs per day, resulting in ultra-fast dispersal. While bed bugs do not transmit diseases, their bites cause itching and allergic reactions.
To exterminate bed bugs, it is recommended to give preference to non-chemical means first
This week, ANSES (National Health Security Agency) warns the French against the use of insecticides to eliminate bed bugs. But once the home is infested with bed bugs, it is difficult to get rid of them. So what to do? Households most often turn to insecticides, but this is not without risk, warns ANSES: “There have been more than 1000 cases of poisoning, sometimes severe, between 2007 and 2021. To eradicate bed bugs, it is recommended to prefer non-chemical means first.”writes the board.

To avoid chemicals: use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum all surfaces thoroughly to trap eggs and parasites. Then clean the vacuum cleaner duct, wrap the bag in a plastic bag and throw it in an outdoor trash can to avoid contaminating other places; machine wash clothes and household linen at more than 55°C; if there is no washing machine, put the clothes in the freezer at – 17°C for at least 72 hours; clean hooks or upholstery with a high-temperature dry steamer (at least 120°C), (can be rented), which destroys all stages of bed bugs.
