46%. This is the percentage of adults who have high blood pressure but are unaware of it, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In general, we talk about hypertension when the blood pressure in the arteries is too high. This chronic disease is favored by many risk factors such as consumption of tobacco, alcohol and also coffee. In fact, in a recent study published on December 21, 2022 in the Journal of the American Heart Association, American researchers were interested in the association between the consumption of two cups of coffee or more per day and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases in people with severe hypertension.
To arrive at this observation, researchers from the University of Osaka (Japan) requested the participation of 6,570 men and more than 12,000 women aged 40 to 79 years.
Participants then provided data through health examinations and self-administered questionnaires assessing lifestyle, diet and medical history. During nearly 19 years of follow-up (until 2009), 842 cardiovascular deaths were documented.
Researchers found that drinking two or more cups of coffee a day was associated with twice the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in people with a blood pressure of 160/100 mm Hg or higher compared to those who didn’t drink coffee. The consumption of a (…)
