Dejan Lovren (Zénith Saint-Petersburg) is approaching Lyon

Laurent Blanc will not have waited very long to get his experienced right-handed centre-back. The Olympic coach wanted a player with spirit, character and aggression to partner him with Castello Lukeba. The Lyon technician should soon be able to count on Dejan Lovren. The Croatia international, a semi-finalist at the last World Cup, had been courted for several days by Lyon managers who convinced him to join the club. The 33-year-old has even passed medical examinations.

Djiku and Söyüncü were also on target

He had six months left on his contract with Zénith Saint-Petersburg, with whom OL could quickly agree a smaller transfer fee. Lovren, who enjoyed great success during the World Cup in Qatar with Josko Gvardiol by his side, will find Lyon almost ten years after leaving. The Croatia international (78 caps, 5 goals) had made 102 appearances for Olympique between 2010 and 2013 before being sold to Southampton.

Bruno Cheyrou, the director of the recruitment unit, had checked three names for this position, as stated in The Team of the Day. In addition to Lovren, the priority, the other targeted players were Alexander Djiku (28), out of contract in six months in Strasbourg, and Turkish Çalar Söyüncü (26), in the same situation in Leicester.
