sleeping less than 7 hours may increase the risk of developing the disease

We can never say it enough: sleeping well is essential, and for good reason. A lack of sleep could increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to the conclusions of a new scientific study.

We know that getting enough sleep allows the body to recover physically and mentally. What is less known is that a lack of sleep could increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study published in Brain Communications and relayed by the Sun.

To reach this conclusion, the scientists analyzed the cerebrospinal fluid of 332 participants and found that those who slept less than 7 hours had increased levels of t-tau protein, a key biomarker for measuring Alzheimer’s risk. . For researcher Laura Stankeviciute of the Fundación Pasqual Maragall, in Barcelona, this new study therefore reinforces the hypothesis that sleep disturbances could represent a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. She calls for “further research” on ways to improve sleep to halt this process.

devastating consequences

In the past, research had already highlighted the devastating consequences of a bad night on health. In particular, it had been proven that a lack of sleep (sleeping five hours or less per night) could expose individuals to a higher risk of developing several chronic diseases such as heart disease, depression, cancer or diabetes.

As a reminder, Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative pathology that leads to a dysfunction of the connections between neurons. About 225,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in France. While the disease most often strikes older people, it can also occur much earlier. According to figures reported by the Alzheimer Research Foundation, 33,000 patients, now aged under 60, are affected.
