Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra is sure of the organization of the World Cup: “The social climate has calmed down at the heart of the GIP”

Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Minister of Sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, visited Stade Toulouse on Friday. After having lunch with president Didier Lacroix and visiting the club’s facilities, she signed the charter of 15 environmentally responsible commitments for organizers of sporting events with the head of the Rouge et Noir club. A charter that particularly covers moderation of lighting, reduction of air conditioning, reduction of heating in gymnasiums or training young people in eco-gestures.

On the sidelines of this signature, the minister returned to the news of rugby affairs, and in particular the news of the former director general of the Public Interest Group (GIP) France 2023 Claude Atcher, now the target of an investigation for harassment morality. Could this strange climate, long maintained at the GIP, jeopardize the organization of the next World Cup (September 8-October 28)?

“There is no worry, but on the contrary self-confidence and serenity. The teams that I met recently (at GIP) are hard at work, they have the experience”

“The event is preparing very well, says Amélie Oudéa-Castéra. We saw the success of the box office, we saw that partners and companies were there, that World Rugby monitored the quality of the organization and that the GIP teams, which are now under the management of Julien Colette, the successor of Claude Atcher, were progressing very well »

“It’s super exciting from a sporting point of view because we’ve got a team that’s in top form, that’s on this streak with 13 wins in 13 games, continued the minister. It is extraordinary to be able to say to ourselves that we have a real chance to win the World Cup on home soil. We all have this opening game against the Blacks on September 8 at the Stade de France on our minds. There is therefore no anxiety, but on the contrary self-confidence and serenity. I think the social climate has calmed down at the heart of this GIP. The teams I met recently are working hard, they have experience. »

The minister travels to Marcoussis

The minister also spoke about the consultation of the clubs from Monday on the subject of the appointment of Bernard Laporte – president sentenced to two years in prison suspended for corruption (he appealed) and withdrawn since – by Patrick Buisson as vice-president of the FFR. Do they exist? Against ? Abstinent?

“We found ourselves in an extremely complex situation with the need to preserve both the ethics and best interests of rugby on the one hand, and to also respect the presumption of innocence to which Bernard is entitled. Laporte on the other, observes Oudéa-Castéra. We were able to find a way with this withdrawal of Bernard Laporte, which was a necessary thing for French rugby. We told ourselves that we needed to have precise instructions to ensure the effectiveness of this withdrawal, and I had called for a democratic time so that the Vice-President could benefit from some kind of dubbing from the clubs.

“So this consultation opens next Monday and runs from January 23 to 26. And I will be able to debrief with the entire FFR steering group on the morning of January 27 when I go to the Marcoussis to be at their page to analyze this hearing. I want it to be surrounded by all guarantees and the greatest fair play in accordance with sporting values. It will take place under the supervision and supervision of the FFR’s Ethics Committee. »

What if no wins? Should new elections be held? “This question will be up to the steering group, which meets on January 27, to answer it, says the minister. Its members will take their responsibilities. What we all need to bear in mind is that this hearing is not an administrative formality, it is a real democratic time binding on all the clubs to be heard. It will therefore be important to draw conclusions which are binding in themselves. I have no doubt that the steering group will do it responsibly on January 27, when it will be up to them to analyze the participation rate, the response and the manner. as the hearing will have taken place. »
