E Ink technology is based on millions of microcapsules that contain negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. These pigments are electrically stimulated to come to the surface and form a specific color.
According to Time and BMW, this E Ink technology could very well be marketed in series in the future, both inside and outside vehicles.

BMW E Ink, how does it work?
Presented at CES in Las Vegas in January 2022, BMW E Ink technology makes it possible to change body color at the touch of a button. It works with millions of microcapsules scattered over the bodywork. These capsules contain positively charged black pigments and negatively charged white pigments. Through electrical stimulation, they can return to the surface of the layer and form a color.
