With a 0.175 drag coefficient (CD), the Lightyear 0 electric with solar roof breaks all records set by production cars nowadays.

The Lightyear 0 will be the most aerodynamic production car in the world when it goes into mass production in two months.

The lower the drag coefficient, the more efficiently the car uses its energy, allowing it to have a greater range in order to be less dependent on electric charging.

The 0.175 (Cd) coefficient of drag of the electric Lightyear 0 with solar roof has been confirmed following a series of comprehensive tests, carried out in one of the FKFS wind tunnels in Stuttgart (Germany), under Worldwide Harmonized conditions. Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP).

The energy consumption of Lightyear 0, and therefore its energy efficiency, depends on three key elements: aerodynamics, rolling resistance and motors.

Aerodynamics is a major consumer of energy within a vehicle, with air resistance increasing exponentially at high driving speeds.

At high speed, aerodynamics accounts for around 60% of overall vehicle energy consumption.

With battery range being one of the top concerns of potential and current electric car drivers, many electric vehicle manufacturers are working to continually optimize their design to improve range.

The Lightyear 0 meets the challenge of aerodynamics with a design that minimizes air resistance and achieves a very low drag coefficient, while maintaining downforce and balance to ensure a smooth ride.

A good (low) drag coefficient makes the car more economical, as it consumes less energy and, therefore, can drive more on a single electric charge.

Lightyear Chief Technology Officer Arjo van der Ham said: “We are extremely proud of this incredible achievement. We had to start from a clean sheet when we started developing our technology and – with great dedication and hard work – we continue to push the boundaries at every step, as we we did it here.”
