Basically, the movie Deep Throat was not that far from reality. The aptly named Insider has indeed just published a survey according to which throat orgasms are commonplace. The article opens with the testimony of a fifty-year-old Texas woman who describes the first time she experienced one. While performing fellatio, she realized that her saliva was getting thicker, and then her whole body started shaking.
That was years ago; since then, this woman has even managed to give herself orgasms by stimulating her throat, tongue and mouth. The practice of oral sex is not essential to obtaining a throat obstacle: a similar result can be obtained by using one’s fingers or a sex toy. But beware, warns the witness interviewed, this spectacular result is far from being achieved every time.
In some people, this orgasm is mainly felt in the mouth or throat; in others, it goes down to the genitals, when it does not cross the entire body. Some testimonies even testified to having experienced throat orgasms by the simple force of thought, after having thought of fellatio or after having moved their erotic thoughts to this area of their body by practicing breathing exercises.
Although unknown, these orgasms do not surprise the scientific community, aware of the richness of the throat in sensory cells as well as the large number of nerve endings in the tongue and mouth. “Orgasm is brain-centric”recalls the sexologist Carol Queen anyway, so that “some people can experience types of orgasms that others would deem mostly impossible”.
The phenomenon would affect both men and women, even if, as explained by doctor Herbert Arthur Otto in his book Liberated Orgasm: The Orgasmic Revolution from 1999, men were more reluctant to talk about their experiences – no doubt due to a form of internalized homophobia. According to testimonies collected by the scientist from several hundred people, approximately 20% of individuals have already had such an experience at least once, a similar percentage for women and men.
The other scientists who have studied the subject do not provide figures, but their work confirms in any case the reality of the throat orgasm. This would be partly due to stimulation of the vagus nerve, the tenth cranial nerve, the longest and most branched of the parasympathetic system, which controls the involuntary activities of the organs.
According to doctor Amir Marashi, co-founder of the Cerē sex toy brand, four of the branches of this very long nerve lead respectively to the back of the throat, the base of the tongue, the throat and the vocal cords. The vagus nerve is also indirectly connected to the genitals with the help of the pudendal nerve, one of the main nerves that innervate the perineum. Hence the fact that stimulation of the throat can lead to sensations between the legs.
G-spot as throat
According to some experts, the throat contains a similar G-spot, located behind the uvula, at the level of the cricopharyngeal muscle, which is part of the top of the esophagus. Stimulating it, on the other hand, would require going to stimulate an area located at the very back of the throat, therefore using a penis or a phallic object. In the testimonials, we can read that certain “deep throat” sessions cause the texture of the tissues of the throat to change, in the manner of what can occur at the level of the vulva.
But then, why don’t affected people have orgasms when they feed or clear their throats? The answer is simple, and it bears repeating: because orgasm starts in the brain, and the right conditions are needed to achieve that kind of climax. Relentlessly mechanically on this area is therefore of little interest: even in trained individuals, the orgasm of the throat is in any case nothing systematic.
This is an opportunity to remember that in matters of sexual intercourse, consent is the absolute basis, and that this kind of practice is discussed beforehand. Given the technicality of the thing, no one will be able to give a throat orgasm to a partner who does not want it. And it’s not even worth imagining trying.
