UEFA coefficients: what results for French clubs after the group stage? – Soccer

At the end of the group stage of the three European Cups, France remains well placed to retain its 5th place in the UEFA coefficient ranking. With five qualified clubs, it has the advantage of numbers over its direct competitors. But watch out for the next round…

PSG will play in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Five out of six. At the end of the group stage of the three European Cups (Champions League, Europa League, Europa League Conference), five of the six French clubs involved in the various competitions are qualified for the next round. And that’s good news for France’s ranking in the UEFA index.

France widens the gap

This week, France scored valuable points thanks to its results. The victories of PSG (2-1 against Juventus Turin), Monaco (4-1 against Etoile Rouge) and Nantes (2-0 against Olympiakos), as well as the draws of Rennes (1-1 against Larnaca) and Nice (2-2 against Cologne) allowed France to consolidate their lead against their direct pursuers in the UEFA coefficient classification.

Still ranked in 5th place over the 2018-2023 period, the reference period for the allocation of European places, France is now 2.797 points ahead of the Netherlands and 5.781 points over Portugal. As a reminder, France must remain 5th in the standings by the end of the season to obtain four tickets (3 + 1), against three currently (2 + 1), for the new formula of the Champions League from 2024-2025 edition.

The advantage of numbers

The elimination of Marseille remains the big black spot of the week. The defeat conceded by the Marseillais in the last seconds against Tottenham (1-2) also allowed the Portuguese Sporting CP to remain European and to be reversed in the Europa League. Nevertheless, France retains more representatives than its two direct competitors, i.e. five (PSG, Monaco, Rennes, Nice, Nantes) against four for the Netherlands (PSV, Ajax, Feyenoord, Alkmaar) and for Portugal (Benfica, Porto, Sporting, Braga).

Now remains these five French clubs to stay in contention as long as possible. And it won’t be easy. The fall of PSG from 2nd place in their group in favor of Benfica exposes the Parisians to a more difficult draw than the Portuguese club for the round of 16 of the C1. Similarly, Mongasques, Rennes and Nantes will play in the C3 play-offs against one of the clubs who lost in the Champions League. That is to say FC Barcelona, Juventus Turin, Ajax Amsterdam, Sporting Portugal, FC Sville, Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen and Salzburg…
